Orange Shirt Day
Thursday Jul 15, 2021
Thursday Jul 15, 2021
This year, The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda will officially observe Orange Shirt Day on September 30.
Trinity Murphy-Dicker, an Inuk artist from Nunatsiavut and member of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Corps, designed The Salvation Army’s shirt.
Orange Shirt Day is held annually to spread awareness of Indian residential schools, honor survivors and their families, remember those who died, and share the message that “Every Child Matters.” The Salvation Army's shirt was developed in consultation with the Orange Shirt Society
Commissioners Floyd and Tracey Tidd, territorial leaders, are encouraging every officer, employee, soldier, and friend of The Salvation Army to order orange shirts designed and authorized exclusively for The Salvation Army by an Indigenous Salvationist artist—and wear them on September 30th to show their support.

Hurricane Elsa
Tuesday Jul 13, 2021
Tuesday Jul 13, 2021
HURRICANE Elsa, the first of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, has caused severe damage in the eastern Caribbean islands of St Lucia and Barbados. Roofs were torn off; trees were down, and power lines were blocking roads. Flooding posed another threat to communities in the path of the Elsa. In the wake of the storm, The Salvation Army has been providing emergency support.
As the storm made landfall in Barbados, the Prime Minister announced that the government would be working with The Salvation Army and other faith-based organizations in order to meet human needs arising from the hurricane.
In both islands, The Salvation Army mobilized to receive donated goods of food and clothing in readiness for distribution.
As Florida was in the path of Elsa as well, Major David Swyers, The Salvation Army’s Area Commander for Tampa said: ‘Wherever the need arises and they ask us to come, that’s what we do.”

Summer Camp
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
Tuesday Jun 22, 2021
Summer camp is one of the best-loved and most impactful Salvation Army ministries in the United States. Unfortunately, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused summer camp and year-round group rentals to be cancelled for more than a year.
However, the great news is that a limited number of campers have returned to Camp Hoblitzelle in Texas for another fun-filled summer!
The Senior Music Conservatory is a four-week residential music camp providing intensive music and arts instruction to children ages 12-17. More than 50 students will attend classes for brass, percussion, guitar, and more, while also attending daily bible studies, and enjoying the top-notch recreational activities of the Camp.
Registration and auditions looked a bit different this year, but the camp is in full swing now and everyone is looking forward to learning about their favorite art form and diving deeper into the word of God.

Hummingbird Valencia
Tuesday Jun 15, 2021
Tuesday Jun 15, 2021
The Salvation Army in San Francisco celebrated the first milestone in its initiative to mitigate homelessness in the city. In collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, PRC/Baker Places and Tipping Point Community, a new psychiatric respite center is now open at the Mission Corps (church). The location will provide a much-needed place for people experiencing the combination of homelessness, mental health issues, and substance use disorders to rest and get connected to care.
Called Hummingbird Valencia, the program is the first step in The Way Out, an initiative designed to double The Salvation Army’s impact on homelessness. Using this site for a behavioral health respite program will continue the mission to serve vulnerable people in the community. Services at Hummingbird Valencia will include a coordination of services and discharge planning, connection to shelter and housing, food, clothing, group counseling and more.
A Salvation Army officer will be on site and available for emotional and spiritual support.
