Haiti Earthquake Response
Thursday Aug 19, 2021
Thursday Aug 19, 2021
The Salvation Army in Haiti is responding after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake brought devastation across the south of the country. Almost 1,300 people are known to have been killed in the disaster, with that number certain to rise as collapsed buildings are cleared and thousands of missing people are accounted for. A Rapid Response project has been put together at The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters in London to provide initial funds for food, drinking water, hygiene items, and a relief team. Damaris Frick, International Emergency Services Director, says the situation is complicated further by COVID regulations and restrictions. ‘The Prime Minister of Haiti has said he won’t be seeking international help until the first assessments have been carried out,’ she explains, ‘but we are fortunate that many Salvation Army personnel in Haiti have received emergency response training.’

The Big Collection
Thursday Aug 12, 2021
Thursday Aug 12, 2021
The Salvation Army in the UK and Republic of Ireland’s Big Collection is a fundraising challenge for members, friends, and volunteers of Salvation Army churches to raise money for local community programs.
Local collectors take on this challenge in many ways – from bike rides, bake sales, to fun runs and charity fashion shows.
In previous years corps officers and church members would collect door-to-door or hold street collections for the ‘Big Collection’ with all funds going towards The Salvation Army’s support services. This year, due to the pandemic, corps are thinking more imaginatively about how they might be able to raise funds through sponsorship or special events.
All donations to the Big Collection directly support The Salvation Army’s work to care for people who are vulnerable or in need. This includes supporting people experiencing homelessness, running care homes for older people, and providing a place of safety for adult victims of modern slavery.

Parents Second Time Around
Tuesday Aug 10, 2021
Tuesday Aug 10, 2021
At a time when people in their later years should be enjoying retirement, some grandparents find themselves starting from scratch and raising their grandchildren. Many children in Connecticut find themselves without parents to raise them due to issues with drug addiction, incarceration and even the death of a parent. That’s where grandparents often step in. As you may be able to imagine, raising young grandchildren comes with many challenges including a lack of resources, peer support, guidance, and energy. The Salvation Army’s Parents Second Time Around program in Hartford, CT provides relative caregivers the support necessary to raise and provide effective care for the children they are parenting. The support includes sharing information on how to be a parent today, educational sessions focused on well-being, child development, health and safety checks, mentoring, and providing caregivers and children with mental, physical, and spiritual support.

Let Justice Roll
Tuesday Jul 20, 2021
Tuesday Jul 20, 2021
Let Justice Roll is a collection of 24 Bible studies developed by women around the world connected with The Salvation Army.
Passionate about social justice, their writings will inspire and challenge participants to stand up against injustice and live with purpose. Commissioner Rosalie Peddle, World President of The Salvation Army’s Women's Ministries, shares:
“The world is filled with hostility, racism, extreme poverty, sexual and domestic abuses, and spiritual emptiness. It’s time to embrace a deeper understanding of biblical justice so that we can reflect Christ’s compassion, character and conviction as we live out his teachings in a globalized, interconnected, yet often impersonal world. It’s time for us to join the fight and be the voice for those whose voices have been silenced by injustice. Jesus continually calls us, his disciples, to be defenders and advocates for justice in our world. How are we responding to His call?”
