The Salvation Army’s Continued Response to Tornado Outbreak
Tuesday Jan 24, 2023
Tuesday Jan 24, 2023
The Salvation Army of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi is continuing relief efforts in the areas surrounding Selma, Alabama after devastating tornadoes hit on January 12th. The Salvation Army partnered with Flint Hill Church to serve meals from the church parking lot and through roving vehicles branching out into harder-hit areas.
Pastor John Hill opened his church as a location for first responders, linemen, and survivors of the storm to sit down and have a hot meal.
“There is no way to prepare for that moment when you drive into an area affected by a strong tornado,” said Salvation Army team member, Cindy Smith. “To see and talk with people sorting through rubble to salvage anything they can…it just reminds us why we are here.”
The Salvation Army will continue to assess areas of need and respond in the aftermath of the storms.

He encouraged believers and non-believers alike to focus on what God has done for us and not our own hard work and efforts.

The Salvation Army’s Response to Disasters
Thursday Jan 05, 2023
Thursday Jan 05, 2023
The military-style structure of The Salvation Army is a significant advantage in quickly responding to disasters like Hurricane Ian. Their Emergency Disaster Services group (EDS) can move trained disaster workers and equipment into affected areas within hours of an event.
“Managing a large disaster response team takes a great deal of coordination,” said Major Bobby Jackson, General Secretary overseeing Emergency Disaster Services in Florida. “Our para-military structure enables us to quickly and efficiently mobilize large numbers of people, vehicles, equipment, and implement a network of distribution centers and suppliers to address the many needs facing those affected by a disaster.”
The Salvation Army does all of this while simultaneously maintaining normal operations and services throughout affected areas. Food pantries, Angel Tree sign-ups, financial assistance for rent and utilities, and more continue daily.

Thursday Dec 29, 2022
Thursday Dec 29, 2022
It’s been one year since a violent, long-tracked tornado tore across Western Kentucky, producing severe to catastrophic damage in many towns, including Mayfield, Princeton, and Dawson Springs.
Fifty-seven fatalities were confirmed from the tornado, making it Kentucky’s deadliest tornado on record.
Almost immediately, The Salvation Army in the region sprung into action. Emergency Disaster Services responded from Madisonville to Dawson Springs approximately 20 minutes after the tornado moved through.
Over the course of the next 28 days, The Salvation Army served 19,000 meals, water, snacks and provided emotional and spiritual care with survivors.
Since that initial response of providing food and hydration, the Army has stayed in the area, providing long term care to meet any needs that other agencies, such as FEMA, are unable to meet.

Hometown Heroes
Tuesday Dec 27, 2022
Tuesday Dec 27, 2022
Erin and Ben Napier are nationally beloved for their hit HGTV show, Home Town, where they renovate and restore homes and businesses in small-town communities across America.
After learning more about their local shelter in Laurel, Mississippi in 2021, serving a meal to clients and bell ringing with staff downtown, the Napier’s heart for serving inspired them to partner with The Salvation Army again this year to highlight how the organization loves beyond life’s most difficult situations.
Throughout this holiday season, Ben and Erin Napier will help raise awareness of The Salvation Army programs that serve our neighbors in need in almost every zip code in the United States. The Salvation Army’s message for Americans to “Love Beyond” hunger, shelter, and disasters symbolizes the resources and programs that 30 million Americans rely on year-round.
