Salvation Army Food Pantry Receives Award
The Salvation Army's food pantry in Jacksonville Illinois has been honored by the state and by University of Illinois Extension for its offerings and attention to healthy options.
The pantry, Red Shield Market, was awarded gold-level status by the extension service for best practices that include having selections that meet different dietary needs. It’s the first pantry in west-central Illinois to reach that level.
The volunteer-operated pantry is a supermarket-style facility that offers a variety pf dry goods, meat, dairy, produce, bakery, personal care and baby items.
About 75 families are served weekly and the pantry expects to distribute 400,000 pounds of food and 15,000 personal care items this year alone.
The state awarded it the Healthy Pantry Initiatives Award during the Hunger and Health Regional Conference in March of this year. The award recognizes a food pantry that demonstrates excellence in healthy initiatives.
